Minimum Standards for Age Care Institutions

Minimum standards are standards services and care below which no organization should operate. There are requirements in terms of physical facilities, services, activities, and organization and management.

These standards were developed with the help of residents, their representatives, providers, staff, professionals, inspectors and commissioners. Standards of care can be categorized as basic, necessity, comfort and luxury.

Old age homes that fulfill the minimum standards of care also ensure that elders enjoy certain rights and values are recognized and honored- dignity and respect, independence, rights, equality and diversity, choice, consent, fulfillment, safety, privacy, confidentiality.

Below is the Minimum Standards and Regulatory Mechanism for Age Care Institutions developed by a regional consultation of southern states. You can also review the specific legal standards for your state.
